Senior Citizens ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬
Our older residents built our cities, our neighborhoods, and defended our nation in times of war. They deserve to be taken care of in the same manner they have taken care of us. That’s why Rep. Dunkin is working to help seniors keep more of their money and reduce red tape that often stands in the way of seniors accessing state services.
Dunkin Restores Tax Relief
With a popular program capping annual property tax increases about to expire I worked to prolong critical tax relief for local homeowners. Senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, veterans returning from duty overseas and disabled veterans will witness increased property tax relief.
Major provisions of House Bill 664 included:
Increased the exemption amount from $5,000 to $6,000 in 2009.
2. Senior Homestead Exemption
Increased the exemption amount from $3,500 to $4,000.
3. Disabled Homestead Exemption
Granted a $2,000 exemption to homeowners with disabilities.
4. Returning Veteran Homestead Exemption
Provided a one-time $5,000 exemption to soldiers, which was obtainable only during the year in which soldiers return from duty.
5. Disabled Veteran Homestead Exemption
Offered a $2,500 exemption to veterans that were 50% to 75% disabled and a $5,000 exemption for veterans that were 75% to 100% disabled.
6. Senior Freeze
Increased the maximum income to $55,000.
7. Circuit Breaker
Increased each income threshold by $1,000.
