An End to the Shooting
With a sudden increase of shootings targeted at Chicago Public School students, I worked with the Office of Governor Rod Blagojevich to bring together local ministers and community leaders to stop the violence. In addition, I am an active supporter of the Community Investment Works Program. This program will provide thousands of summer jobs for local youth to give them an alternative to street life and gang violence.
This year, I am supporting an assembly of gun control laws. These laws will make it more difficult for criminals to get their hands on deadly weapons. One regulation that I support is going to limit handgun purchases to one firearm per month. This would cut off a supply of guns purchased by “straw buyers.” Another measure included in this assembly would require more parents to use gun-locks when minors are present. In addition, it would also reinforce consequences for parents who do not comply. Lastly, I continue to support a ban on assault weapons, as well as high-capacity ammunition magazines.
